00:00:48 --> 00:00:51 universe's first galaxies weren't overly

00:00:51 --> 00:00:53 massive after all but it appears their

00:00:53 --> 00:00:55 Central black holes were making them

00:00:55 --> 00:00:58 seem bigger and brighter the findings

00:00:58 --> 00:01:00 reported in the astronomical Journal

00:01:00 --> 00:01:02 shows that galaxies which appeared

00:01:02 --> 00:01:03 overly massive in the very early

00:01:03 --> 00:01:06 Universe most likely hosted black holes

00:01:06 --> 00:01:09 which were rapidly consuming gas making

00:01:09 --> 00:01:10 them both brighter in appearance and

00:01:10 --> 00:01:12 also look bigger than they really were

00:01:12 --> 00:01:15 as a result you see when astronomers got

00:01:15 --> 00:01:17 their first glimpses of galaxies in the

00:01:17 --> 00:01:19 early Universe from NASA's web Space

00:01:19 --> 00:01:21 Telescope they're expecting to find lots

00:01:21 --> 00:01:24 of Galactic dwarves but instead what

00:01:24 --> 00:01:27 they found appear to be a bevy of giants

00:01:27 --> 00:01:29 some galaxies appear to have grown so

00:01:29 --> 00:01:31 massive so quickly that simulation

00:01:31 --> 00:01:34 simply couldn't account for it and that

00:01:34 --> 00:01:36 suggested that something must be wrong

00:01:36 --> 00:01:37 with science's understanding of the

00:01:37 --> 00:01:39 standard model of cosmology that's the

00:01:39 --> 00:01:41 theory that explains what the universe

00:01:41 --> 00:01:44 was made of and how it evolved since the

00:01:44 --> 00:01:47 Big Bang 13.8 billion years ago a

00:01:47 --> 00:01:49 study's lead author Katherine chowski

00:01:49 --> 00:01:51 from the University of Texas at Austin

00:01:51 --> 00:01:53 says some of these early galaxies are in

00:01:53 --> 00:01:55 fact much less massive than they first

00:01:55 --> 00:01:57 appeared but their Central super massive

00:01:57 --> 00:02:00 black holes feeding verocious make them

00:02:00 --> 00:02:01 appear to be much brighter and bigger

00:02:01 --> 00:02:04 than they really are she says while

00:02:04 --> 00:02:05 astronomers are still seeing more

00:02:05 --> 00:02:07 galaxies than predicted none of them are

00:02:07 --> 00:02:09 so massive that they break the universe

00:02:09 --> 00:02:11 or at least science's understanding of

00:02:11 --> 00:02:14 it the evidence was provided by web's

00:02:14 --> 00:02:16 Cosmic Evolution early release science

00:02:16 --> 00:02:19 survey it was led by study co-author

00:02:19 --> 00:02:22 Steven finklestein also from UT Austin

00:02:22 --> 00:02:24 it shows that friction in the fast

00:02:24 --> 00:02:26 moving gas being consumed by these super

00:02:26 --> 00:02:28 massive black holes emits a lot of heat

00:02:28 --> 00:02:30 and light making the galaxies appear to

00:02:30 --> 00:02:32 be much brighter than they would be were

00:02:32 --> 00:02:35 the light emitted just from Stars so

00:02:35 --> 00:02:37 this extra light is what's making it

00:02:37 --> 00:02:39 appear that the galaxies contain more

00:02:39 --> 00:02:41 stars than they really do and hence are

00:02:41 --> 00:02:44 more massive when scientists remove

00:02:44 --> 00:02:46 these galaxies dub little red dots based

00:02:46 --> 00:02:48 on their red color and small size from

00:02:48 --> 00:02:50 their analysis the remaining early

00:02:50 --> 00:02:52 galaxies are no longer too massive to

00:02:52 --> 00:02:54 fit within the predictions of the

00:02:54 --> 00:02:57 standard model although they've settled

00:02:57 --> 00:02:59 the main dilemma a l Les thorny problem

00:02:59 --> 00:03:01 remains means you see there are still

00:03:01 --> 00:03:03 roughly twice as many massive galaxies

00:03:03 --> 00:03:05 in the web data of the early universe as

00:03:05 --> 00:03:07 what was expected according to the

00:03:07 --> 00:03:09 standard model now one possible

00:03:09 --> 00:03:11 explanation for this is that stars

00:03:11 --> 00:03:13 simply formed more quickly in the early

00:03:13 --> 00:03:16 Universe than what they do now chowski

00:03:16 --> 00:03:18 proposes the early Universe was simply

00:03:18 --> 00:03:21 better at turning gas into stars star

00:03:21 --> 00:03:24 formation happens when molecular gas and

00:03:24 --> 00:03:26 dust clouds cool enough for denser

00:03:26 --> 00:03:28 regions in those clouds to start to

00:03:28 --> 00:03:31 collapse under their own and gravity

00:03:31 --> 00:03:32 this eventually becomes a sort of

00:03:32 --> 00:03:35 runaway effect ultimately turning the

00:03:35 --> 00:03:38 gas into stars but as the gas contracts

00:03:38 --> 00:03:41 it heats up generating outward pressure

00:03:41 --> 00:03:43 now in our region of the universe this

00:03:43 --> 00:03:45 balance of the opposing forces tends to

00:03:45 --> 00:03:47 make the star formation process very

00:03:47 --> 00:03:50 slow the Milky Way for example is only

00:03:50 --> 00:03:52 producing one solar mass star every

00:03:52 --> 00:03:55 Earth year at the moment but perhaps

00:03:55 --> 00:03:57 because the early Universe was closer

00:03:57 --> 00:03:59 together and hence denser it would have

00:03:59 --> 00:04:01 been hard to blow gas out during star

00:04:01 --> 00:04:03 formation allowing the process to go

00:04:03 --> 00:04:06 faster concurrently astronomers have

00:04:06 --> 00:04:08 been analyzing the Spectre of little red

00:04:08 --> 00:04:10 dots discovered with web finding

00:04:10 --> 00:04:13 evidence of fast moving hydrogen gas a

00:04:13 --> 00:04:16 signature of black hole action discs and

00:04:16 --> 00:04:18 this supports the idea that at least

00:04:18 --> 00:04:19 some of the light coming from these

00:04:19 --> 00:04:21 compact red objects comes from gas

00:04:21 --> 00:04:23 swirling around black holes rather than

00:05:02 --> 00:05:04 largest spacecraft NASA has ever built

00:05:04 --> 00:05:06 for interplanetary exploration is now on

00:05:06 --> 00:05:08 track for a launch window opening on

00:05:08 --> 00:05:12 October 10 the next major milestone for

00:05:12 --> 00:05:14 Clipper is key decision Point e that'll

00:05:14 --> 00:05:16 be on September the 9th when the agency

00:05:16 --> 00:05:18 will decide whether the Project's ready

00:05:18 --> 00:05:20 to proceed to launch and Mission

00:05:20 --> 00:05:22 operations the spacecraft's now been

00:05:22 --> 00:05:24 fitted with its enormous solar arrays at

00:05:24 --> 00:05:26 the agency's Kennedy Space Center in

00:05:26 --> 00:05:28 Florida each of the two massive solar

00:05:28 --> 00:05:32 arrays measures 14.2 M long and 4.1 M

00:05:32 --> 00:05:34 wide and just like the rest of the

00:05:34 --> 00:05:36 spacecraft they too are the biggest

00:05:36 --> 00:05:38 nases ever developed for an

00:05:38 --> 00:05:40 interplanetary Mission and of course

00:05:40 --> 00:05:43 they have to be so large so they can cir

00:05:43 --> 00:05:45 up as much sunlight as possible during

00:05:45 --> 00:05:46 the spacecrafts mission to study

00:05:46 --> 00:05:49 Jupiter's ice Moon Europa which is five

00:05:49 --> 00:05:51 times further away from the Sun than the

00:05:51 --> 00:05:53 Earth the Rays have now been folded up

00:05:53 --> 00:05:55 and secured against the spacecraft's

00:05:55 --> 00:05:57 main body for the launch but when

00:05:57 --> 00:05:59 they're deployed in space Europa clip

00:05:59 --> 00:06:02 will span more than 30.5 M across that's

00:06:02 --> 00:06:05 longer than a basketball court the wings

00:06:05 --> 00:06:07 as Engineers call them so big that they

00:06:07 --> 00:06:09 could only be opened one at a time in

00:06:09 --> 00:06:11 the clean room of the Kennedy Space

00:06:11 --> 00:06:13 Center's payload hazardous servicing

00:06:13 --> 00:06:15 facility where teams are readying the

00:06:15 --> 00:06:17 spacecraft for launch this report from

00:06:17 --> 00:06:20 NASA TV it's going to take 6 years to

00:06:20 --> 00:06:22 get out there just think about the size

00:06:22 --> 00:06:24 just blers the Sol is a Powerhouse for

00:06:24 --> 00:06:26 the spacecraft on its Journey from Earth

00:06:26 --> 00:06:28 to Europa we've just completed our first

00:06:28 --> 00:06:30 flight like to deployment these solar

00:06:30 --> 00:06:32 rays are so big we can only test One

00:06:32 --> 00:06:34 Wing at a time these solar rays are

00:06:34 --> 00:06:36 really unique in that not only do they

00:06:36 --> 00:06:37 need to survive extremely cold

00:06:37 --> 00:06:41 temperatures - 400° F it's also meant to

00:06:41 --> 00:06:43 survive the extremely harsh Jupiter

00:06:43 --> 00:06:44 radiation environment we've built the

00:06:44 --> 00:06:46 solar r on Earth we've tested them but

00:06:46 --> 00:06:49 now they're actually going to Jupiter to

00:06:49 --> 00:06:51 provide Power to all the instruments in

00:06:51 --> 00:06:53 the spacecraft to send back valuable

00:06:53 --> 00:06:55 science it's an engineering feat that

00:06:55 --> 00:06:57 we're able to develop this it is

00:06:57 --> 00:06:59 extremely exciting for me to be part of

00:06:59 --> 00:07:02 that's TJ Lee from John's Hopkins

00:07:02 --> 00:07:05 University each solar array is composed

00:07:05 --> 00:07:07 of five panels needed to power the

00:07:07 --> 00:07:09 flybys in a region of the solar system

00:07:09 --> 00:07:11 that only receives 3 to 4% of the

00:07:11 --> 00:07:14 sunlight the Earth getes designed and

00:07:14 --> 00:07:15 built at the John's Hopkins Applied

00:07:15 --> 00:07:18 Physics laboratory in lurel Maryland and

00:07:18 --> 00:07:20 Airbus in Leiden in the Netherlands

00:07:20 --> 00:07:21 these solar arrays are far more

00:07:21 --> 00:07:23 sensitive than the type of solar panels

00:07:23 --> 00:07:26 used on homes and the highly efficient

00:07:26 --> 00:07:28 euroba Clipper spacecraft will make the

00:07:28 --> 00:07:30 most out of the power they generate once

00:07:30 --> 00:07:33 in Jovian orbit Europa Clippers solar

00:07:33 --> 00:07:35 arrays will together provide roughly 700

00:07:35 --> 00:07:38 wats of power that's about what a small

00:07:38 --> 00:07:40 microwave oven or a kitchen coffee maker

00:07:40 --> 00:07:43 uses a board Clipper batteries will

00:07:43 --> 00:07:44 store the power to run all the

00:07:44 --> 00:07:46 electronics the full payload of science

00:07:46 --> 00:07:49 instruments Communications equipment the

00:07:49 --> 00:07:51 onboard computer and the entire

00:07:51 --> 00:07:53 propulsion system which includes 24

00:07:53 --> 00:07:55 engines and while powering all that the

00:07:55 --> 00:07:57 arrays also need to operate in extreme

00:07:58 --> 00:08:00 cold the space Craft's temperature will

00:08:00 --> 00:08:03 plunge to - 240° c when operating

00:08:03 --> 00:08:06 through Jupiter Shadow and to ensure the

00:08:06 --> 00:08:08 solar panels can operating those

00:08:08 --> 00:08:10 extremes Engineers tested them in a

00:08:10 --> 00:08:13 specialized cryogenic chamber in Belgium

00:08:13 --> 00:08:15 see the spacecraft itself has heaters

00:08:15 --> 00:08:17 and an internal thermal Loop which keeps

00:08:17 --> 00:08:19 the onboard systems in a fairly normal

00:08:19 --> 00:08:21 temperature range but the solar arrays

00:08:22 --> 00:08:24 are exposed to the vacuum of space

00:08:24 --> 00:08:26 without heaters they're completely

00:08:26 --> 00:08:28 passive so whatever the local

00:08:28 --> 00:08:30 environmental temperature is that's the

00:08:30 --> 00:08:32 temperature they get about 90 minutes

00:08:32 --> 00:08:34 after launch the solar arrays will

00:08:34 --> 00:08:36 unfill from their forth position over

00:08:36 --> 00:08:39 the course of about 40 minutes about 2

00:08:39 --> 00:08:43 weeks later 6 17.6 M antennas a fixed to

00:08:43 --> 00:08:45 the arrays will also deploy to their

00:08:45 --> 00:08:48 full size these antennas belong to the

00:08:48 --> 00:08:50 radar instrument and they'll search for

00:08:50 --> 00:08:51 water within and beneath the Jovian

00:08:52 --> 00:08:54 Moon's thick icy shell meanwhile

00:08:54 --> 00:08:56 Engineers have just completed tests on

00:08:56 --> 00:08:58 the radiation heiness of the transistors

00:08:58 --> 00:09:00 being used on the Europa clippa

00:09:00 --> 00:09:03 spacecraft longevity is key because the

00:09:03 --> 00:09:05 spacecraft will Journey for more than 5

00:09:05 --> 00:09:07 years in order to arrive at the Jian

00:09:07 --> 00:09:10 system in 2030 as it orbits the gas

00:09:10 --> 00:09:12 giant the probe will fly by Europa

00:09:12 --> 00:09:15 multiple times using a squid of science

00:09:15 --> 00:09:16 instruments to find out whether the

00:09:16 --> 00:09:18 liquid water ocean beneath the moon's

00:09:18 --> 00:09:21 Frozen surface has the right sort of

00:09:21 --> 00:09:24 conditions to support Life as We Know It

00:09:24 --> 00:09:25 Europa is slightly larger than the

00:09:26 --> 00:09:28 Earth's moon but contains more water

00:09:28 --> 00:09:31 than all the Earth's oceans combined

00:09:31 --> 00:09:33 many scientists believe that life on

00:09:33 --> 00:09:35 Earth began in the oceans possibly at

00:09:35 --> 00:09:38 mid ocean ridges where unique habitats

00:09:38 --> 00:09:41 exist those same sort of conditions are

00:09:41 --> 00:09:43 thought to exist on the floors of

00:09:43 --> 00:09:45 europa's oceans which raises the

00:09:45 --> 00:09:47 question could life have formed there as

00:09:47 --> 00:09:50 well and that question is fascinating

00:09:50 --> 00:09:52 because if we do eventually find life on

00:09:52 --> 00:09:55 say the red planet Mars well that would

00:09:55 --> 00:09:57 be exciting but Earth and Mars have been

00:09:57 --> 00:10:00 swapping rocks for billions of years is

00:10:00 --> 00:10:02 so there's always a possibility that a

00:10:02 --> 00:10:04 meteorite strike on Mars from Earth may

00:10:04 --> 00:10:06 have contaminated the red planet with

00:10:06 --> 00:10:09 Earthly microbes on the other hand it

00:10:09 --> 00:10:10 could have been Martian microbes which

00:10:10 --> 00:10:13 first provided the Earth with life in

00:10:13 --> 00:10:15 which case we're all really

00:10:15 --> 00:10:18 martians but if life is found out beyond

00:10:18 --> 00:10:20 the snow line on the Jovian Moon Europa

00:10:20 --> 00:10:22 that's a completely different story

00:10:22 --> 00:10:24 that's not a case of pan spermia

00:10:24 --> 00:10:27 contamination from somewhere else it

00:10:27 --> 00:10:28 would mean that life arose there

00:10:28 --> 00:10:31 independent ly and if life has arisen in

00:10:31 --> 00:10:33 our solar system at two separate

00:10:33 --> 00:10:36 locations it would mean life must be

00:10:36 --> 00:10:38 common throughout the

00:10:38 --> 00:10:40 Universe Europa Clipper's main science

00:10:40 --> 00:10:42 objectives are to determine the

00:10:42 --> 00:10:44 thickness of the moon's icy shell and

00:10:44 --> 00:10:46 its interactions with the ocean below to

00:10:46 --> 00:10:48 investigate its composition and to

00:10:48 --> 00:10:51 characterize its geology the mission's

00:10:51 --> 00:10:53 detailed exploration of Europa will help

00:10:53 --> 00:10:54 scientists better understand the

00:10:54 --> 00:10:56 astrobiological potential for habitable

00:10:56 --> 00:11:00 worlds beyond Earth the spacecraft was

00:11:00 --> 00:11:01 assembled at NASA's jet propulsion

00:11:01 --> 00:11:04 laboratory in Pasadena California it was

00:11:04 --> 00:11:06 then transported across the country to

00:11:32 --> 00:11:36 is really a art form a dance one of the

00:11:36 --> 00:11:38 things that we have to think about is

00:11:38 --> 00:11:40 how we're going to make our spacecraft

00:11:41 --> 00:11:43 fit inside of our Shi ring container we

00:11:43 --> 00:11:45 have to figure out what Hardware needs

00:11:45 --> 00:11:47 to ship with the main spacecraft and

00:11:47 --> 00:11:48 what Hardware needs to be taken off like

00:11:48 --> 00:11:51 taking off the High Gain antenna one of

00:11:51 --> 00:11:53 the things we need to do is lift a

00:11:53 --> 00:11:54 spacecraft from its ground support

00:11:54 --> 00:11:56 equipment and move it into the shipping

00:11:56 --> 00:11:58 container stop okay perfect our multi-

00:11:58 --> 00:12:00 mission container was specially designed

00:12:00 --> 00:12:04 to carry spacecraft across the country

00:12:04 --> 00:12:05 that means that the temperature is

00:12:05 --> 00:12:07 controlled the environment's controlled

00:12:07 --> 00:12:10 how many particles that can be inside

00:12:10 --> 00:12:11 are controlled to make sure that our

00:12:11 --> 00:12:13 spacecraft stays clean and

00:12:13 --> 00:12:16 safe the spacecraft has an amazing

00:12:16 --> 00:12:19 journey once we're in the shipping

00:12:19 --> 00:12:20 container got

00:12:42 --> 00:12:48 Space

00:12:48 --> 00:12:50 Center so the spacecraft isn't the only

00:12:50 --> 00:12:52 thing that we actually pack up and ship

00:12:52 --> 00:12:54 across the country there's all these

00:12:54 --> 00:12:55 things that we call Ground support

00:12:55 --> 00:12:57 equipment gsse that need to go with us

00:12:57 --> 00:13:01 those help us manage the spacecraft we

00:13:01 --> 00:13:05 have 12 trucks of ground support

00:13:05 --> 00:13:07 equipment and then we will have two

00:13:07 --> 00:13:09 trucks that support the spacecraft move

00:13:09 --> 00:13:12 itself so a grand total of 14

00:13:12 --> 00:13:15 trucks emotionally this is one of the

00:13:15 --> 00:13:17 scariest periods of time it's the first

00:13:17 --> 00:13:20 time the spacecraft is going from a very

00:13:20 --> 00:13:22 very very controlled environment and

00:13:22 --> 00:13:23 going into more of an uncontrolled

00:13:23 --> 00:13:27 environment where other human beings are

00:13:27 --> 00:13:31 around the behind the scenes is a lot of

00:13:31 --> 00:13:34 Engineers that are planning out every

00:13:34 --> 00:13:35 step of this

00:13:35 --> 00:13:38 process lots of members of our assembly

00:13:38 --> 00:13:40 test and launch operations team actually

00:13:40 --> 00:13:42 uproot their families and moved to

00:13:42 --> 00:13:46 Florida for 6 months my emotions for

00:13:46 --> 00:13:47 Europa Clipper and the spacecraft

00:13:47 --> 00:13:49 leaving is Bittersweet I think it's

00:13:49 --> 00:13:50 going to feel like if my kids go off to

00:13:51 --> 00:13:52 college when the spacecraft was here in

00:13:52 --> 00:13:54 Southern California I could come over

00:13:54 --> 00:13:55 and visit anytime I wanted to now in

00:13:55 --> 00:13:57 Florida it's going to be a little bit

00:13:57 --> 00:13:59 more difficult it's more like getting a

00:13:59 --> 00:14:00 phone call every other week but it's

00:14:00 --> 00:14:03 going to be exciting too because now our

00:14:03 --> 00:14:05 spacecraft is getting ready to do its

00:14:05 --> 00:14:06 final dance it's getting ready to

00:14:06 --> 00:14:08 graduate and be on its way to do this

00:14:08 --> 00:14:10 science around Europa this beautiful

00:14:10 --> 00:14:14 moon around

00:14:14 --> 00:14:17 Jupiter and in that report from NASA TV
