00:07:35 --> 00:07:37 in February 2005 we had our first close

00:07:37 --> 00:07:39 flyby of

00:07:39 --> 00:07:41 Enceladus and the magnetometer signal

00:07:41 --> 00:07:43 saw something

00:07:43 --> 00:07:46 unusual what a magnetometer does is it

00:07:46 --> 00:07:48 measures the magnetic field in the

00:07:48 --> 00:07:51 vicinity of the instrument we had to

00:07:51 --> 00:07:52 look at The Wiggles and they looked

00:07:52 --> 00:07:55 strange the magnetic field of Saturn is

00:07:55 --> 00:07:56 moving towards it and it couldn't

00:07:56 --> 00:07:58 penetrate down onto the surface which

00:07:58 --> 00:08:01 was pointing to an atmospheric signature

00:08:01 --> 00:08:03 of some kind here it looked like it had

00:08:03 --> 00:08:07 a tiny

00:08:07 --> 00:08:10 atmosphere in March we came even closer

00:08:10 --> 00:08:14 looking for that same strange signal

00:08:14 --> 00:08:16 what it showed was that the the

00:08:16 --> 00:08:18 signature the atmospheric signature we

00:08:18 --> 00:08:20 were seeing was focused at the South

00:08:20 --> 00:08:23 Pole it was almost like there was a

00:08:23 --> 00:08:25 cometary plume of water vapor coming off

00:08:25 --> 00:08:27 from the South Pole people were saying

00:08:27 --> 00:08:29 it's got to be Jets it's got to be Jets

00:08:29 --> 00:08:30 and the iming team was saying no no no

00:08:30 --> 00:08:32 we don't want to say that you know until

00:08:32 --> 00:08:35 we're sure so we went closer we came

00:08:35 --> 00:08:38 within 175 km of Enceladus then we got

00:08:39 --> 00:08:42 the data back and it was spectacular and

00:08:42 --> 00:08:45 then we found the evidence geysers

00:08:45 --> 00:08:47 coming out of the South Pole with water

00:08:47 --> 00:08:50 vapor and water ice particles there were

00:08:50 --> 00:08:52 active geysers at the South Pole of

00:08:52 --> 00:08:55 Enceladus because we were so close all

00:08:55 --> 00:08:57 of the other instruments were able to

00:08:57 --> 00:09:00 take really good data and we put

00:09:00 --> 00:09:01 together all of this data we saw the

00:09:01 --> 00:09:03 cracks the tiger stripes of the South

00:09:03 --> 00:09:06 Pole we saw heat leaking out from these

00:09:06 --> 00:09:09 tiger stripes on subsequent flybys we

00:09:09 --> 00:09:13 found organic material dust water vapor

00:09:13 --> 00:09:15 coming out of the plume the cassin

00:09:15 --> 00:09:17 discoveries in the first three flybys

00:09:17 --> 00:09:20 were so amazing we changed our focus and

00:09:20 --> 00:09:23 added 20 more flybys of Enceladus

00:09:23 --> 00:09:26 including seven through the icy Jets the

00:09:26 --> 00:09:29 surprising magnetometer reading led us

00:09:29 --> 00:09:31 to the liquid water ocean underneath

00:09:31 --> 00:09:33 enceladus's icy

00:09:34 --> 00:09:37 crust after over a decade of research

00:09:37 --> 00:09:39 with Cassini we now know there's a

00:09:39 --> 00:09:41 potential for the ocean on Enceladus to

00:09:41 --> 00:09:44 support life and that has altered the

00:09:44 --> 00:09:46 way we think about where life might be

00:09:47 --> 00:09:49 found in our own solar system and in the

00:09:49 --> 00:09:53 worlds

00:12:41 --> 00:12:42 more insight into the timing and

00:12:43 --> 00:12:44 mechanisms behind the formation of the

00:12:44 --> 00:12:47 first large scale jets in our universe

00:12:47 --> 00:12:49 the studies lead author Anique gemman

00:12:50 --> 00:12:51 from the National Science Foundation

00:12:51 --> 00:12:53 says the researchers were looking for

00:12:53 --> 00:12:55 quazars with strong radio jets in the
