Silence is Golden: The C-Suite Guide to Noise Reduction

This week, the Pro Audio Suite team dives into the sophisticated world of C-suite noise reduction. Discover the secrets to maintaining crystal-clear sound in any professional setting. Plus, we're toying with the idea of a live show featuring you, our beloved listeners. Fancy Andrew making a house call on his Vespa for a special episode? Let us know! Tune in for an episode packed with expert insights, laughter, and maybe, just maybe, a live audience next time.

This week on The Pro Audio Suite, we tackle the intricate world of recording on the go. With the ever-increasing demand for mobility in voiceover work, we dissect the use of shotgun mics in less-than-ideal environments, the golden rule of getting your setup right from the start, and the tempting but perilous path of "fixing it in the mix". Our conversation veers into the high stakes of recording from the road, dubbed the black belt of audio recording, where knowing your tools inside out is paramount. We scrutinize the effects of overusing plugins like Isotope, Waves Clarity, and Acorn's latest offerings, especially the trade-offs between noise reduction and the dreaded d-reverb, and their impact on audio fidelity. Moreover, we explore practical strategies for minimizing room reverb without sacrificing the room's aesthetics, leveraging the latest AI and machine learning technologies for a cleaner sound, and the importance of recording a clean, unprocessed track as a safety net. Join us as we ensure you're equipped to record high-quality audio, no matter where you are. A big shout out to our sponsors, Austrian Audio and Tri Booth. You are any history. Welcome, Hi the Pro Audio Suite. Thanks you guys, a professional and motivated thanks to try Booth, the best vocal booth for home or on the road voice recording and Austrian audio making Passion Hurt introducing Robert Marshall from Source Elements and Someone Audio Post Chicago, Aaron, Robert Robertson from Voodoo Radio Imaging Side to the video Stars, George the Tech Whittam from LA and Me, Andrew Peters Voice Ober Talents and Home Studio Guy and welcome to another pro audio suite Thanks to try Booth. You can break free with ease with the try Booth and of course Austrian Audio. This week we're talking about sea Suite, which is so sweet. Yeah, I think it's kind of cool. So C suite is something new, well not new, but new to us because we maybe Robert says, we talked about this week talk about I think it's our first. I've done text of work with people who've had it. Yeah. Yeah, c suite is a pretty amazing tool because it is a real time expander, multi band expander, right, so it's expanding over I don't know as many bands as it seems to have support for. So here's the deal. This is basically a plug in that runs in a proprietary environment called the Universal Audio UAD console. You cannot run this plug in without an Apollo. So why am I bringing this up? I think that this noise reduction plug in because of its ability to do what it does real time with no latency, being able to monitor it real time, being able to use it for source connect sessions and whatever. Makes just the plug in with an Apollo like an appliance. It's like a one stop shop for doing real time sessions where you have to control your noise floor. Now, any engineer like Robbo will tell me, turn that crap off. I can do all that, right, And I know that's true. Right, you don't your audio, Yeah, don't process your audio exactly please. However, we have this internal struggle all the time on our show, right, which is process or not process. And there's a lot of situations where the actor feels compelled or the real world thing is that the actor is so damn nervous about ruining a session due to background noise that they feel pressured into using stuff like this. And I have clients that do use plugins like this all the time when they are traveling, when they're in different situations, and it lets them pull off sessions they couldn't do otherwise in cars in Yeah. Can I just say, though, in the situation that you're talking about in terms of a live, live session where you don't want to get it wrong, I wouldn't have an issue with a voice artist plugging that in because I'm there to control it. If I can hear it working, I'm going to be able to tell them in a life situations. It doesn't bother me so much. That's very true. Like if you're hearing the result of said plug in in real time and you're not happy with it, I can just say turn it off, right. So that does make it a little bit awkward. You do feel like you have to maybe subtly call the talent out or sort of break a session a little bit so you can geek out with the talent in front of the clients. It depends on when it happens, depends how you run your sessions too. I mean I always catch up with my voice talent, you know, ten five minutes before the session and sort of go to them, look at you sort of ready to go, am I hearing what I'm going to hear yet I'm not or not actually, hang on, I'm standing up the back of the room. Or what if you're going from one to the other. That happens in front of clients sometimes if you're literally like going from like one session to the other, like you have multiple talent booked or stuff. Yeah, it's funny because I've had that happen to me where you know, the the other end of the line when we're doing a source connector said, have you've got a compressor on? And I have, by accident, had a compressor on, which I thought was so bad boy, so gentle. Yeah, but I didn't even think you could hear it, and they could hear it, so I turned it off. So what's the scenario where do you see sweet? Well, I think it's a pretty niche situation for a voice actor. I do have a client who uses it when he is in his r V, so he's an act. Well, I don't know if I have a couple of clients with r vs. But he's doing a source connect. He's he's in the campground. The guy next to him fires up his RV. It's the middle of a source cann act rummaging through the garbage. C Sweet saved his butt in that case and he pulled off the session. So what's the doing. My understanding is it's a very very fancy multi band expander, and why it's so good is because it's so damn simple. It's just in a similar vein to like waves clarity. It's just a single knob, right, so I'd say it's less artifact prone than clarity. This is one hundred percent as eas it goes, so you're hearing the maximum amount of artifacts. It's very artifact free. And that's why it is the gold standard on film production because it's based on another hardware system called Cedar CEA d R, and production mixers on set will pay roughly one thousand dollars a channel for this plug in. Wow, they have a hardware version of it. It's in a rack, and they'll either have a two channel version. The forensic version of Cedar stuff is like ten thousand dollars and like big, big money for the you know, right. So I mean it's hard to say whether this is as amazing or as perfect as the one on set that they use on sets. However, you're getting really that same kind of algorithm that same product result and the very little latency or no latency of it, and you're getting it for way, way, way less. I mean, you could buy an Apollo for five hundred like the Solo, and by this plug in at full full US dollars price three point fifty, and it's still cheaper than a single channel of SED. So it's pretty it's a pretty interesting idea. And this, this unlike clarity, is is not like voice centric. This is just noise reduction. This is not specifically voice right, It's not a it's not a voice algorithm. It's just a broad it's just a briadeband noise reduction that's listening to the full spectrum. And you can sort of see that when you watch the waveform moving on screen. You can see that it's it's listening to a wide range of frequencies. And then so like when an airplane flies by, and it's the airplane so stinking loud, you just see the lower end of the graph lighting up as the you know, goes by. And then when you stop speaking, it shows you what's the residual noise floor below the basically a below the threshold. But again I think That's what's cool about it is there's not seventeen or one hundred different knobs and controls. Yeah, it's doing a completely different thing, but that that that Gouey reminds me of Sooth. That it's doing a different things. Soothe is a noise reduction, but the guy reminds me of that with the waveform up and down and below above the line, below the line. It kind of also has like a C four C six kind of thing to it as well. Yeah, so this came up because they did a promo that I thought they never would do, which is they did a two for one plugin bundle and you could pick anything. So what did I pick? I picked this plug in because it's three hundred and fifty dollars. The other plugin I got was the Sphere Microphone Collection because I wanted to start playing with the Sphere mic Modeler and no, I don't know, ye did we play with that with the O eight went eights? We could? Yeah? Why not? That was my thought? So I'm going to plug the OC eight one eight into the Apollo and start playing with all the Sphere of mind. Might I might get the exact same bundle you got there? How much was that one hundred bucks for hundred bucks for dollars? Yes, I'm buying it. I'm buying it. Everybody listening to this is like, damn it. This was like a week ago. You best it's still going today, right yeah? Everybody else for us and everybody, it's too late to be in no way, so quick robo edit, just like quick right turn it. I'll see if we were live. Guys. By the way, as our fans of the show, if you think having us do a live stream where some of you can join us live is a value to you, lord, let us know in the comments. Let us know in the comments. That's all I'm going to say. And secondarily making any promise Andrew to visit. Yes, let us know in the comments, and you can come and do the show from your place, Yes, exactly, exactly, and it'll show up on a vesper. What happens if you're driving in the States, though, ap do you have to write the vesper on the other side, of course? I do the pro audio Suite and Austrian audio recorded using Source Connect, edited by Andrew Peters and mixed by Voodoo Radio Imaging takes the pot from George the tech don't forget to subscribe to the show and joining the conversation on our Facebook group to leave a comment, suggest a topic, or just say today, drop us a note at our website dot com.
