00:00:00
Good day, everyone. And welcome to the Astronomy Daily Podcast
00:00:03
for Wednesday, the July 12th, 2023. My name is Hae and I will
00:00:07
not be your host for today. And as usual, I have my favorite
00:00:10
human in the studio with me. We are trying a little experiment
00:00:13
as we both have free time today and to try and keep the
00:00:16
interesting astronomy news flowing for our listeners. So
00:00:18
over to you, Tim, how many days is the podcast.
00:00:24
With your host, Paul Gibbs? Thanks for a great introduction
00:00:28
there, Hay. And as Sally has already said, we're gonna try a
00:00:31
little experiment today, what I call a One story Wednesday, One
00:00:35
story from Hay and One story from myself. So hopefully you
00:00:39
will enjoy and as usual, you can leave feedback on our Facebook
00:00:44
page over to you Hay for your story.
00:00:47
That's a great idea. Tim, here is my story for today, Artemis
00:00:52
Four and Artemis five moon missions will include European
00:00:56
astronauts. I do everything to make sure that our commitment
00:00:59
will be met.
00:01:00
European Space Agency chief Joseph Asher says we now know
00:01:04
when Europeans will land on the moon alongside NASA astronauts,
00:01:09
both the Artemis Four and Artemis five moon landing
00:01:12
missions which are slated to launch in 2028 and 2029
00:01:15
respectively.
00:01:16
Will feature One European Space Agency astronaut ESA Director
00:01:20
Joseph Asher said another ESA astronaut is guaranteed to fly
00:01:25
on a future Artemi Moon mission, but which One is not decided
00:01:28
yet? I'm very happy and very proud that NASA is relying on
00:01:32
Europe as a partner in providing critical elements for Artemi
00:01:36
missions.
00:01:36
Ash Baer said he was speaking on July 1st hours after the launch
00:01:41
of Euclid and ESA led Dark Universe mission that also has
00:01:44
NASA participation and said the agencies seek to have a good
00:01:48
dialogue about expectations for all missions. I do everything to
00:01:52
make sure that our commitment will be met.
00:01:54
Ash Boxer added was an early signatory to the NASA led
00:01:58
Artemis Accords which aimed to set a path for moon exploration
00:02:02
and to establish international peaceful norms for space
00:02:05
exploration. The addition of India and Ecuador last month
00:02:09
brings the number of Artemis Accord signatories to 27.
00:02:13
Europe is also contributing the service module which supplies
00:02:16
electricity and other resources for NASA's Orion spacecraft
00:02:20
which will carry Artemis astronauts to the moon. And ESA
00:02:24
is supplying in partnership with Japan, a habitat module and a
00:02:28
refueling module for NASA's moon orbiting Gateway space station.
00:02:32
A key piece of Artemis infrastructure. Officials
00:02:36
previously said that in exchange, the agency will
00:02:39
receive three flight opportunities for European
00:02:41
astronauts to launch on Artemis missions but did not name those
00:02:45
flights.
00:02:46
ESA also continues to send astronauts to the International
00:02:49
Space Station including Denmark 's Andreas Mogensen who is set
00:02:53
to launch on SpaceX's crew seven mission on August 15 European
00:02:58
astronauts slated to launch on shorter ISS missions are also in
00:03:02
training with the private company Axium Space which uses
00:03:05
SpaceX hardware for space missions.
00:03:08
Marcus want from Sweden will be the first of the group on AX
00:03:11
three set to launch in late 2023. Artemis missions are
00:03:15
already underway in November 2022.
00:03:19
NASA launched Artemis One an UNCW round the moon trip that
00:03:22
sent several mannequins and science experiments on a test of
00:03:25
Orion and the space launch system rocket. The first crude
00:03:28
mission of the program, Artemis two is expected to launch in
00:03:31
November 2024 to go around the moon and back its quartet of
00:03:36
astronauts named in April 2023 will be the first people to head
00:03:40
toward the moon in more than 50 years.
00:03:43
Canadian Jeremy Hansen will fly with three NASA astronauts in
00:03:46
exchange for Canada arm three slated to launch to Gateway
00:03:49
later in the decade.
00:03:54

00:04:03

00:04:07
Friday. Now, down to my story for today, India and the UK to
00:04:12
connect their space clusters.
00:04:14
UK Science Minister has said India and the UK are also
00:04:18
discussing how they can better harness low Earth observation
00:04:22
orbits and the regulation of satellite communications. He
00:04:25
said ramping up their cooperation in the area of
00:04:28
space, India and the UK will connect their space clusters
00:04:32
starting with Leicester Space Park.
00:04:34
You came in UK S Minister for Science Research And Innovation,
00:04:38
George Freeman has said, he also said that India and the UK are
00:04:42
also discussing how they can better harness low Earth
00:04:45
observation orbits and the regulation of satellite
00:04:48
communications. According to Freeman, both countries are also
00:04:51
keen to work together in the field of nuclear energy and
00:04:55
looking forward to collaborating on nuclear fission and nuclear
00:04:58
fusion.
00:04:59
We are looking to connect the UK Space cluster parks with Indian
00:05:03
Space Parks, starting with Leicester so that we can grow
00:05:06
the space economy and nurture the skills for the new
00:05:10
generation of young Indian scientists working in the UK and
00:05:15
innovators in a commercial space economy from was in Mumbai last
00:05:19
week to attend the meeting of G 20 science Ministers.
00:05:22
He also met his Indian counterpart Dura Singh. He said
00:05:27
the UK is investing in its space clusters that are spread around
00:05:31
the country. Freeman added the UK is committed to not trying to
00:05:35
grow a vertical integrated sovereign closed space economy
00:05:39
but an open commercial global economy.
00:05:42
The UK has passed the Space Act the first nation in Europe to
00:05:46
launch and set the regulatory framework for space. He said in
00:05:50
the next few months this summer, we are looking at how quickly to
00:05:54
develop these ideas.
00:05:55
So when Prime Minister Rishi Soak comes to India later this
00:05:59
year, he and Prime Minister Narendra Modi Modi will have a
00:06:03
very rich package of measures to announce. So talks are going on
00:06:07
this summer. Freeman said he said India and the UK are also
00:06:11
looking at areas where the two countries have strategic
00:06:14
interests and very strong synergy in the area of future
00:06:18
telecoms, satellite communications A I and five G.
00:06:22
We see India as the world's largest democracy and rapidly
00:06:26
becoming the biggest and influential economy. India's
00:06:29
adoption of technologies and the regulation of those technologies
00:06:33
would be absolutely key for global security. So we have
00:06:37
agreed to work on those very important technologies to
00:06:40
develop both techno technological cooperation and
00:06:44
also regulatory cooperation.
00:06:46
The UK Minister said India's innovation economy, the scale of
00:06:51
growth and the digital technologies mean the UK and
00:06:54
India have a very, very exciting few years ahead. Freeman added
00:07:00
that's my story for today and I do hope you enjoyed the show.
00:07:03
Bye for now. See you next time.
00:07:05
Bye thanks Tim TT FN for the Astronomy Daily Podcast.
